This month and next month the Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Due to the way Jupiter’s gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide.
At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August, Mars will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That’s pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history. So mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grows progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Hoy fue uno de esos días de los que te levantas y no hay agua caliente, y de los que alguien te regala un chocolate, y se te olvida que lo traes en el bolsillo hasta que buscas cambio para darle al viene-viene y la mano sale como paleta cubierta… cheil!
Pero, llegue a mi casa y ya estaba mi CD doble del Concierto de Pearl Jam!
Que suerte tienen los que no se bañan.
Acabo de ver «The million dollar Hotel» ¿cómo es que se me había ido? Que bueno es Wenders. Y Que gran Soundrtack.
Hubo una época en que me llenaba de cine. Cualquier cosa era buena, comercial, de arte, cineteca, cine club, video… Participé en varias muestras, maratones y ciclos. Me proclamaba cinéfilo.
Lo mejor que me pudo haber pasado, entonces, me pasó, me hice Cácaro. Pero en cuanto acabe ese ciclo deje ir mucho al cine. Aún ahora casi no como palomitas.
Mi plan de vida aún incluye todavía tener mi propio cine. Aunque probablemente no se llame “Muchos Mas”.
El otro día vi el principio de Sneakers en la tele (Héroes por Azar, el título en español). Me gusta mucho esa película, ya tiene algunos años. Robert Redford, Sydney Poiter y River Phoenix antes de que se nos fuera.
Hablando de River Phoenix, todo mundo lo recuerda por ?My own Private Idaho?. Yo no. No la he visto. Yo lo recuerdo por Sneakers y como el Joven Indy en La ultima cruzada. Pero bueno, vi el principio de Sneakers hasta donde están todos los del equipo decidiendo que iban a hacer con el dinero que iban a ganar. Sydney Poiter se iba a ir de viaje, Dan Akroyd planeaba comprar un Camper y etc. Cuando llega el turno a River Phoenix de decir que va hacer con su dinero, responde: Lo que yo quiero es conseguirme una buena chica y tener una relación padre. Obviamente la respuesta provoca mucho choteo. No acabe de ver la película, ya era muy tarde. Pero recuerdo que al final, el gobierno gringo les pide que se mantengan callados acerca de-lo-que-se-trate-la-película, y uno a uno empiezan a pedir lo que habían hablado entes en la fiesta.
Tu que quieres? Le preguntan a Phoenix. «Ve esa muchacha del equipo SWAT que esta por allá?», «si?», «Podría conseguirme su número?»… La expresión de la mujer de: Puedes tener lo que quieras en el mundo y quieres mi teléfono?. No tiene madre. Me gusta.
Como platicaba con Emilio el otro día, cada quien sus prioridades, las mías se parecen a las de River Phoenix.
